Home Automation

I have been playing with some home automation and smart home technology for quite some time, but like my other projects I have not had the time to truly expand or polish this project.

I have been using Home Assistant as the open source based framework for building my home automation system. Home Assistant is a free and open-source software for home automation. It is designed to be the central control system for smart home devices with focus on local control and privacy. It has a substantial and very active community and has matured considerably over the past few years.

My Home Assistant home page
Current home page – still a lot to add….

The system integrates with Philips Hue for some smart light switches, motion sensors and temperature sensors. Also, it is linked to Google Assistant and linked to our solar power system to see power usage and production. I use location sensing on our phones to detect who is home. I have also done simple things like linking the Smart TV and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) feed.

I am about to build a front gate controller to control both pedestrian and car access from Home Assistant. I will document the build of this interface in an upcoming post.

I will provide more details of my installation and configuration soon. Out of interest (to me, anyway), I have used the floorboard background, as it matches the floors in the downstairs of our house.

This page is still very much under construction.

  1. Hi Ken

    Interesting post.
Could you share how you integrated the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) data into Home Assistant?
